This is the start of the volunteers two week training plan.  They complete many Outdoor Instructor modules including navigation, ropes and lashings.  They will be very busy with this training which includes rock climbing, water based activities and wild camping, good luck to you all.

All the staff and volunteers are taking advantage of the high winds today to go Blokarting at the old airport site.  Blokarts are like land yachts but these can go really fast.  The Instructor is hoping to pass a number of the volunteers in this activity.

The Staff and volunteers are off to Snowdonia on a navigational exercise today.  Phil is leading the way as part of his National Governing Body award for his Basic Exhibition Leader Award.  A lot of training has been taking place recently to get the volunteers ready for the hiking season.  Compass and maps at the ready.  It’s this way, no it’s not it’s this way!!!!

Some of the volunteers and staff are off training today for a BELA award (Basic Expedition Leader) they have to do a number of days camping and navigational exercises.  The remainder of the volunteers will be doing in-house training at the Centre completing a basic challenge sheet.  We have 10 young people on the Future Jobs Fund here with us for the next six months all training towards becoming Outdoor instructors.  We do manage to get many of these into other Outdoor Centres all over Europe and the UK.  Four out of the last group of 8 are now working in Centres, two are  working at Kingswood Colomendy and two others will be going to the South of France in March so well done to you all, keep in touch.

MYCT has been running a training course for unemployed young people from Merseyside.  We recieved funding from The Targeted Support Fund to run this course for 10 young people.  Whilst here they learned how to work in a group environment, leadership skills and completed 16 modules.   They  also passed two National Governing Body Awards that will help them gain employment within the Outdoor Industry.

Congratualtions to Gary, Jennie, Kevin, Mel, Phil, Andy, Andrew, James, Martin, Tony and Matty.  They all worked really hard during the course and achieved some great outcomes.  Keep in touch.

Out of the orignal 10 three are now employed with another three starting short term contracts in May, two others have pending interviews lined up.  This has been a great success and we look forward to running another course like this.

It is only with the help and support from organisations/trusts/funders like the Targeted Support Fund that we can continue to run these worthwhile courses for these needy individuals.  If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for MYCT and learning new skills please contact the Centre
